Mr. Fixer technician performing refrigerator repair

A refrigerator runs around the clock, so when it starts to struggle you usually find out the hard way: soft ice cream, warm milk or a puddle under the crisper drawers. The sooner the cause is found, the better your chances of saving the food inside and avoiding a bigger repair later.

Mr. Fixer Appliance Repair is a family-owned company that has repaired refrigerators across Metro Atlanta since 2017. Our licensed and insured technicians work on everything from basic top-freezer models to built-in units, and they arrive in trucks stocked with the parts that fail most often, such as fan motors, defrost components, door gaskets, water valves and thermistors.

Most refrigerator problems are fixable for far less than the price of a new unit. Call (678) 866-3669 or book online, and we will diagnose the problem, explain it in plain terms and give you a written price before we touch a part.

Quick checks before you call

  • Make sure the dial or display has not been bumped to a warmer setting, and confirm the fridge is set around 37°F and the freezer around 0°F.
  • Check that the door closes fully and nothing is propping it open, such as a shelf, a drawer or a tall bottle.
  • Look at the air vents inside the fresh-food and freezer sections and move any food that is blocking them.
  • Unplug the refrigerator, then vacuum the condenser coils behind the lower grille or on the back. Dusty coils are a very common cause of weak cooling.
  • If the ice maker or dispenser stopped, see whether the water filter is past its replacement date and that the supply valve behind the fridge is open.

Common refrigerator problems we fix

Refrigerator not cooling

When the freezer is cold but the fresh-food side is warm, the usual suspects are a frosted-over evaporator from a failed defrost heater, a stopped evaporator fan or a stuck air damper. If both sections are warm, we look at the condenser fan, start relay, control board and compressor.

Freezer too warm or frosting up

Heavy frost on the back panel almost always points to the defrost system: the heater, the defrost thermostat or the control that times the cycle. A torn door gasket that lets humid air in can cause the same frost pattern.

Fresh food freezing

Lettuce frozen solid near the back usually means a damper stuck open, a failed temperature sensor or a control board sending too much cold air. Items pushed against the air vent can freeze even when everything works, so we rule that out first.

Water leaking on the floor

Leaks commonly come from a clogged defrost drain, a cracked water inlet valve, a loose filter housing or a split supply line to the ice maker. Water inside the fridge under the crisper drawers is almost always a frozen or blocked defrost drain.

Ice maker not making ice

Check that the ice maker is switched on and the freezer is cold enough, usually around 0°F. Past that, the cause is often a failed water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, a clogged water filter or a faulty ice maker module.

Water dispenser not working

A dispenser that stops flowing may have a frozen line in the door, a failed dispenser switch or actuator, a bad inlet valve or simply an overdue filter. Low water pressure to the house can also slow it to a trickle.

Loud or unusual noises

Clicking, buzzing, grinding or squealing usually comes from a fan motor with worn bearings or a blade hitting ice. A loud click followed by the compressor shutting off often points to a failing start relay or overload.

Refrigerator won't turn on

If the lights and display are dead, we check the outlet, power cord and main control board. If the lights work but nothing cools, the start relay, overload, compressor or temperature control is more likely at fault.

Runs constantly

A fridge that never cycles off is often fighting dirty condenser coils, a weak door seal, a failing condenser fan or a defrost problem that has blocked airflow. Left alone, it wastes power and wears out the compressor.

Sweating doors or condensation

Moisture on the outside of the doors or between them usually means a worn gasket, a door that has sagged out of alignment or, on many side-by-side and French door models, a failed mullion or anti-sweat heater.

Interior light out or flickering

Older models use a bulb and a door switch, both easy fixes. Many newer refrigerators use LED light boards, which can fail as a unit or go dark because of a control board fault.

Types we service

Top-freezer and bottom-freezer

Simple designs with fewer parts, but they still rely on a working defrost system and a sound door seal. On bottom-freezer models we also repair drawer slides, rollers and drawer-mounted gaskets.

Side-by-side

The tall, narrow freezer and through-the-door dispenser add water lines, door heaters and dispenser controls. Ice and water problems are the most common calls on this style.

French door

These models often have multiple temperature zones, an in-door ice maker and electronic controls. We handle ice maker failures, mullion problems, door alignment and the sensors that manage each zone.

Built-in and counter-depth

Built-in units such as Sub-Zero, Thermador and KitchenAid sit flush with the cabinets, so we work carefully within the trim and panels. Many have the condenser on top, which needs its own cleaning schedule.

Built-in column models

Column refrigerators from brands such as Sub-Zero and Thermador fit flush with the cabinetry and often have tight component layouts. We work carefully around the panels and trim to reach fans, controls and seals.

How your repair works

  1. Book a time

Call (678) 866-3669 or book online any hour. We ask for the brand, model and what you are seeing so the technician brings the right parts.

  2. Diagnosis at your home

The technician checks temperatures, airflow, the defrost system, fans and controls to find the actual cause rather than guessing at parts.

  3. Written estimate

You get a written price for parts and labor before any work starts. If you go ahead, the $80 diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair.

  4. Repair with genuine parts

Most repairs are completed on the first visit using factory-recommended parts from the truck. If a part must be ordered, we schedule the return trip.

  5. Test and warranty

We confirm the unit is cycling and pulling temperatures down before we leave. The repair is covered by our 60-day parts and labor warranty.

Maintenance tips from our technicians

Clean the condenser coils

Vacuum the coils every six to twelve months, more often with pets. Clean coils let the compressor shed heat easily, which keeps cooling strong and reduces wear.

Check the door gaskets

Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out with no drag, that section of the seal is weak. Wipe gaskets with warm soapy water so they stay soft.

Leave room for air

Overpacked shelves block the vents that move cold air between compartments. Keep a few inches clear in front of the vents, especially at the back of the top shelf.

Replace the water filter on schedule

A clogged filter slows the dispenser and ice maker and puts strain on the inlet valve. Most manufacturers suggest changing it about every six months.

Keep an eye on temperatures

A cheap appliance thermometer in each section shows a slow drift before food spoils. Aim for 37 to 40°F in the fridge and about 0°F in the freezer.

What affects the cost

What you pay depends mostly on which part has failed and how hard it is to reach. A door switch or fan motor costs far less than a sealed-system repair, and built-in models can take longer to access. Every visit starts with the $80 diagnostic fee, which is credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and you get a written estimate before any work begins. See our pricing page for more detail.

Repair or replace?

Most full-size refrigerators last roughly 10 to 15 years, and high-end built-in models often run longer with good care. A useful rule is the 50 percent rule: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator, or the unit is near the end of that range, replacement is usually the better value. Fans, defrost parts, valves and gaskets are almost always worth fixing. Compressor and sealed-system repairs on an older unit deserve a closer look, and our technician will give you an honest opinion either way. Our guide on repair versus replacement covers the decision in more depth.

Refrigerator Repair FAQs

What are the most common refrigerator problems you repair?

Warm fresh-food sections, frost buildup in the freezer, water leaks, ice makers that stop working and noisy fans make up most of our calls. We also repair control boards, start relays and compressors.

How can I tell if my refrigerator needs a repair?

Food spoiling sooner than it should, a fridge that runs nonstop, frost on the back wall of the freezer, puddles on the floor and new clicking or grinding sounds are all signs of a developing problem.

Do you offer same-day refrigerator repair?

Yes, in most areas of Metro Atlanta. Technicians work Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM, and calling early in the day gives you the best chance of a same-day visit.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

the diagnostic fee is $80 and is credited toward the repair if you go ahead. The repair price depends on the part and labor involved, and you receive a written estimate before any work starts.

Is it worth repairing an older refrigerator?

Often it is. A fan, defrost heater or valve repair is usually a fraction of the cost of a new fridge. If the unit is past about 10 to 15 years old or needs a compressor, we will tell you honestly whether replacement makes more sense.

What should I do with my food while I wait?

Keep the doors closed as much as possible. A closed refrigerator generally holds safe temperatures for about four hours, and a full freezer holds longer. Move perishables to a cooler with ice if the repair will take longer.

Which refrigerator brands do you repair?

All major brands, including Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Maytag and Kenmore, along with built-in brands such as Sub-Zero and Thermador.

What can I safely fix myself?

Cleaning the condenser coils, replacing the water filter, swapping a light bulb and clearing blocked vents are reasonable DIY tasks. Leave refrigerant, compressor and wiring work to a licensed technician.

Do you warranty refrigerator repairs?

Yes. Every repair includes a 60-day parts and labor warranty. If the same problem returns in that window, call us and we will make it right.
