Dryers look simple, but today's models use moisture sensors, electronic controls and several safety devices that shut the heat off when something is wrong. A dryer that stops heating is often protecting itself from a deeper problem, so swapping one part without finding the cause can mean the same failure a week later.
A neglected dryer is also a fire risk. Lint packed in the vent and housing is flammable, and a dryer that runs hot is a warning sign, not just an annoyance.
Since 2017, Mr. Fixer Appliance Repair has repaired gas and electric dryers throughout Metro Atlanta. Call (678) 866-3669 or book online and a licensed technician will find the cause and fix it properly.
Quick checks before you call
- Clean the lint screen and look into the slot it sits in for buildup.
- Go outside and run the dryer to feel whether air is blowing strongly from the vent hood. Weak airflow means the vent likely needs cleaning.
- Check the breaker panel. Electric dryers use a double breaker, and if one side has tripped the dryer may run without heat.
- For gas dryers, confirm the gas supply valve behind the dryer is open. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility from outside.
- Make sure the transition hose behind the dryer is not crushed or kinked when the dryer is pushed back.

Common dryer problems we fix
Not heating
On electric dryers, a burned-out heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a failed thermostat are common causes. On gas dryers, a weak igniter, failed gas valve coils or a flame sensor problem is more likely. A clogged vent is often the reason those parts failed in the first place. Our guide to a dryer that is not heating explains each cause.
Takes too long to dry
Restricted airflow is the top cause. A full lint screen, a crushed transition hose or a lint-packed vent run keeps moist air trapped in the drum. Dirty moisture sensor bars can also end the cycle too early.
Won't start
We check the door switch, the start switch, thermal fuse, the drive motor and the control board. Many dryers will not start at all if thermal fuse has blown.
Drum won't turn
If the motor hums or runs but the drum stays still, the drive belt is usually broken or has slipped off. A seized idler pulley or a failing motor can do the same.
Loud thumping, squealing or scraping
Thumping often comes from flat spots on worn drum rollers, squealing from a dry idler pulley or rollers, and scraping from worn drum glides or a foreign object caught behind the drum.
Shuts off after a few minutes
A dryer that stops shortly after starting may be overheating because of a blocked vent and tripping a safety thermostat. A weak drive motor can also shut itself off.
Runs hot or smells like burning
Excess heat usually means poor airflow or a failed cycling thermostat. A burning smell can come from lint near the heater. Stop the dryer and get it checked before using it again.
Has power but no heat on electric models
Electric dryers need both legs of a 240-volt circuit to heat. If one breaker in the pair has tripped, the drum may turn while the element stays cold.
Clothes still damp after a full cycle
Check the vent first. If airflow is good, a failing heater, a faulty thermistor or a moisture sensor misreading the load may be ending the cycle too soon.
Shakes or vibrates
An unlevel dryer, a worn drum roller or a stacked kit that has worked loose can cause vibration. Leveling the feet fixes many cases.
Types we service
Electric dryers
Electric dryers run on a 240-volt circuit and heat with an element. We repair elements, thermostats, thermal fuses, motors, belts and controls.
Gas dryers
Gas dryers use standard 120-volt power for the motor and controls and burn natural gas or propane for heat. We service igniters, gas valve coils, flame sensors and burners.
Front-load and stackable pairs
Stacked dryers are harder to reach, especially when mounted above a washer. We service the dryer section of stacked pairs and laundry centers.
Vented and ventless models
Most dryers vent outdoors, but condensing and heat pump dryers recycle air and collect moisture. Ventless designs need clean condensers and filters to work properly.
Steam and sensor-dry models
Many newer dryers add steam cycles and moisture sensing. We diagnose the sensors, water valves and controls behind those features.
How your repair works
Request service
Book online or call any time. Tell us whether the dryer is gas or electric and what it is doing.
Safety and airflow check
The technician tests the vent airflow, heat source, thermostats, fuses and motor, because a blocked vent often causes the failed part.
Estimate in writing
We put the price on paper before starting. the $80 diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair as soon as you approve the repair.
Repair and clean-out
We replace the faulty parts with factory-recommended ones and remove lint we find inside the cabinet while it is open.
Heat test and warranty
We run the dryer to confirm it heats, tumbles and cycles off correctly. Repairs are covered for 60 days on parts and labor.
Maintenance tips from our technicians
Clean the lint screen every load
It takes seconds and keeps air moving. Wash the screen with warm soapy water every few months if dryer sheets leave a film on it.
Clean the vent at least once a year
Long vent runs, rooftop vents and heavy use need more frequent cleaning. A clean vent shortens dry times and lowers fire risk.
Use a rigid or semi-rigid duct
Replace thin foil or plastic transition hoses with semi-rigid metal duct, and keep the run as short and straight as practical.
Match the cycle to the load
Sensor or automatic dry cycles stop when clothes are dry, which saves energy and protects fabrics better than long timed cycles.
Don't overload the drum
Clothes need room to tumble. Overloading strains the belt, rollers and motor and leaves damp spots.

What affects the cost
Dryer repair costs depend on the failed part, whether the dryer is gas or electric, and how easy it is to get to. A thermal fuse or belt is a smaller job than a drive motor or control board, and stacked units add labor. Diagnosis costs $80 which is credited toward the repair, and we put the estimate in writing before work starts.
Repair or replace?
Dryers generally last around 10 to 15 years. A simple rule is the 50 percent rule: if the repair costs more than half of what a comparable new dryer costs, especially on an older unit, replacing it is usually the better choice. Heating elements, igniters, belts, rollers and thermal fuses are reasonable repairs on almost any dryer. A failed control board on an older budget model is where we may suggest replacement.

Dryer Repair FAQs
Why is my dryer not heating?
The most common causes are a blown thermal fuse, a failed heating element or igniter, a bad thermostat or a tripped breaker. A clogged vent often causes these failures. Fixing the part without clearing the vent often leads to the same failure again.
Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry clothes?
Usually a restricted vent. Lint buildup in the duct slows airflow and traps moisture. If the vent is clean, a weak heater or faulty sensor may be the cause.
Do you repair both gas and electric dryers?
Yes. We service both types and every major brand.
How much does dryer repair cost?
The price depends on the part and labor. There is the $80 diagnostic fee, credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and you get a written estimate first.
Do you offer same-day dryer repair?
Yes, in most areas we serve across Metro Atlanta, depending on the day's schedule.
Why is my dryer so loud?
Worn drum rollers, a dry idler pulley, a stretched belt or worn drum glides are typical sources. Coins or buttons trapped near the blower can also rattle.
How often should I clean my dryer vent?
At least once a year, and more often if you dry several loads a day or have a long or rooftop vent run.
Should I repair or replace my dryer?
If the dryer is under about ten years old and the repair is less than half the cost of a new one, repair is typically the better value.
Which dryer brands do you service?
All major brands, including Whirlpool, Maytag, LG, Samsung, GE, Kenmore, Electrolux, Frigidaire and Amana.
What warranty do you offer on dryer repairs?
Every dryer repair includes a 60-day parts and labor warranty.
