Modern dishwashers are quieter and use less water than older models, but they also rely on electronic controls, sensors and small pumps that a handyman is rarely equipped to diagnose. When one starts leaving grit on glasses or standing water in the tub, a proper diagnosis saves you from replacing parts that were never the problem.
Mr. Fixer Appliance Repair has fixed dishwashers in homes across Metro Atlanta since 2017. Our technicians carry common dishwasher parts, including drain pumps, inlet valves, door latches, float switches and gaskets, so many repairs are finished during the first visit.
If your dishwasher is acting up, call (678) 866-3669 or schedule online. You will know the price in writing before any repair begins.
Quick checks before you call
- Turn off power at the breaker, then remove and rinse the filter in the bottom of the tub. A clogged filter causes many cleaning and draining complaints.
- Spin the spray arms by hand and clear any blocked holes with a toothpick.
- If the sink has a garbage disposal, run it before starting the dishwasher. Both often share one drain line.
- Check that the water supply valve under the sink is open and that the breaker or GFCI outlet has not tripped.
- Make sure you are using dishwasher detergent, not hand dish soap, and that the child lock is not turned on.

Common dishwasher problems we fix
Dishes come out dirty
Clogged filters and blocked spray arm holes cause most poor cleaning. When those are clear, we check the circulation pump, the wash motor and the heating element, since water that never gets hot will not dissolve detergent or grease.
Water left in the bottom
Standing water usually means a clogged filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, a jammed drain pump or a backed-up garbage disposal connection. A new disposal with its knockout plug still in place is a classic cause after installation.
Leaking onto the floor
Leaks often trace back to a worn door gasket, a cracked spray arm, a loose hose clamp, a failed pump seal or the wrong detergent producing excess suds. Using regular dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent will flood a kitchen quickly.
Won't fill with water
If the tub stays dry, the water inlet valve, a stuck float switch, a door latch that is not registering closed or a control board fault are the most likely causes. We also confirm the supply valve under the sink is fully open.
Humming but not running
A hum with no water movement often means a pump that is jammed by glass or a fruit pit, or a motor that will not start. Running it repeatedly in that state can burn out the motor, so stop and call.
Cycle runs far too long
Long cycles are often caused by a heating element that cannot bring water up to temperature, a faulty thermostat or temperature sensor, or, on older units, a timer that no longer advances.
Cloudy or spotty glassware
Hard water, too little rinse aid and rinsing dishes too heavily before loading are frequent culprits. If the problem appeared suddenly, a weak heater or poor water fill may be to blame.
Door won't latch or close
A broken latch, a bent strike or worn door springs and cables can stop the door from sealing. Most dishwashers will not start until the latch confirms the door is shut.
Won't start or controls unresponsive
Child lock settings, a tripped breaker or GFCI outlet and a failed door switch are the first things we check. After that, the control panel or main board may need testing.
Bad odor
Food trapped in the filter, a drain hose without a high loop and a sump that never fully empties are the main sources of smells. Cleaning the filter and correcting the drain routing usually solves it.
Types we service
Built-in undercounter
The standard 24-inch dishwasher found in most Atlanta kitchens. We handle pumps, valves, latches, controls and the drain connection to the sink or disposal.
Panel-ready and integrated
These hide behind a custom cabinet panel and often have controls along the top edge of the door. We take care with the panel and door springs during service.
Compact 18-inch
Common in condos and smaller kitchens, these use the same core parts in a tighter space, which makes careful disassembly important.
Drawer dishwashers
Single and double drawer models, such as those from Fisher & Paykel, have their own seals, motors and controls for each drawer. We diagnose each drawer separately.
How your repair works
Tell us what is happening
Book online or call. Details such as standing water, an error light or a leak location help the technician prepare.
Hands-on inspection
We run the dishwasher, watch the fill and drain, and test the pump, heater, valve, latch and controls to pinpoint the fault.
Clear price in writing
Before work begins, you get a written estimate. Approve the repair and the $80 diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair.
Fix and full cycle test
We replace the failed part with a factory-recommended one, then run a cycle to confirm proper fill, wash, heat and drain with no leaks.
Backed by our warranty
Your repair carries 60 days of coverage on parts and labor, and the technician will share any habits that help the machine last.
Maintenance tips from our technicians
Clean the filter monthly
Many newer dishwashers have a manual filter instead of a grinder. Rinsing it every few weeks keeps water flowing and prevents odors and poor cleaning.
Scrape, don't pre-rinse
Scrape food into the trash, but skip heavy rinsing. Detergent works best when it has some soil to act on, and over-rinsed loads tend to come out etched or cloudy.
Use the right detergent and rinse aid
Use detergent made for automatic dishwashers in the recommended amount, and keep the rinse aid dispenser filled, especially in homes with hard water.
Run hot water first
Run the kitchen tap until the water is hot before starting a cycle. The dishwasher then starts with hot water instead of heating cold water from the line.
Inspect the door gasket
Wipe the gasket and the lower door edge regularly. Cracks, flat spots or buildup are early signs of a leak.

What affects the cost
The final cost comes down to the part and the time to reach it. Clearing a jammed drain pump or replacing a door latch is usually simpler than replacing a control board or a circulation motor, and panel-ready models can add labor. The visit begins with the $80 diagnostic fee that is credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and the technician writes up the estimate before starting. Our article on what dishwasher repairs cost in Atlanta walks through common scenarios.
Repair or replace?
A dishwasher typically lasts about 9 to 12 years. Under the 50 percent rule, if a repair would cost more than half of what a similar new model costs, replacing it is usually smarter, especially near the end of that lifespan. Pumps, valves, latches, gaskets and heating elements are routine repairs worth doing on most machines. Rust through the tub or a leak that has damaged the base is often a sign it is time to replace.

Dishwasher Repair FAQs
What dishwasher problems do you fix most often?
Draining problems, leaks, dishes that come out dirty, units that will not fill and door latch failures. We also repair control panels and noisy pumps.
Why is there water in the bottom of my dishwasher?
Most often the filter is clogged, the drain hose is blocked or kinked, or the drain pump is jammed. If a new garbage disposal was just installed, the knockout plug may still be in the drain inlet.
Do you offer same-day dishwasher repair?
In most areas of Metro Atlanta, yes. Book early in the day for the best chance at a same-day appointment.
How much does it cost to fix a dishwasher?
Every visit starts with the $80 diagnostic fee, credited toward the repair if you go ahead. The repair price depends on the part and labor, and you will get it in writing before any work starts.
Should I repair or replace my dishwasher?
If it is under about nine years old and the repair costs less than half the price of a comparable new model, repair is usually the better choice. Our technician will give you a straight answer.
Can I fix my dishwasher myself?
Cleaning the filter, clearing spray arm holes and checking the supply valve are safe tasks with the power off. Electrical problems, pump replacements and anything involving the control board are best left to a technician.
Which dishwasher brands do you repair?
All major brands, including Bosch, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag and Frigidaire, plus premium models such as Thermador.
Is it safe to run a leaking dishwasher?
No. Even a small leak can soak the subfloor and cabinets. Stop using it, wipe up the water and schedule a repair.
Do your dishwasher repairs come with a warranty?
Yes. Repairs include a 60-day parts and labor warranty.
