Mr. Fixer technician performing oven & cooktop repair

Ovens and cooktops have changed a lot in the last two decades. Electronic controls, touch panels, convection fans, glass and induction surfaces and precise temperature sensors make cooking easier, but they also add components that are sensitive to the heat these appliances produce every day.

Electronics and heating parts wear with use, and a cooking appliance that has seen ten or more years of regular meals will usually start showing some problems. Sometimes the fix is a single igniter or sensor. Other times a control board or a cracked glass top needs replacing. Because every case is different, we always start with proper testing instead of guessing.

Mr. Fixer Appliance Repair has serviced gas, electric and induction cooking appliances across Metro Atlanta since 2017. Call (678) 866-3669 or book online for a diagnosis and a written estimate. If you ever smell gas, leave the house first and call your gas utility from outside.

Quick checks before you call

  • Check the breaker panel. Wall ovens and electric cooktops usually run on a 240-volt double breaker that can trip on one side.
  • Make sure the oven clock is set and no control lock or Sabbath mode is turned on, since some ovens will not heat until the clock is set.
  • On gas burners, lift the caps, make sure they sit flat and dry, and gently clear the ports with a straight pin. Do this only with the burner off and cool.
  • Put an oven thermometer in the center of the oven and compare the reading to the setting after 20 minutes of preheating.
  • If you smell gas, do not light anything or flip switches. Leave the home and call your gas company from outside.

Common oven & cooktop problems we fix

Gas oven not heating

The most common cause is a weak hot surface igniter. It still glows, but not hot enough to open the gas safety valve, so the oven never lights or takes a long time to. A failed valve or control can also be at fault, and gas valve work is never a DIY job. Our guide to an oven that is not heating covers more causes.

Electric oven not heating

A bake or broil element that no longer glows red, often with a visible blister or break, is the usual suspect. If the elements test good, we check the temperature sensor, relays on the control board and the wiring to the elements.

Oven temperature is off

If food undercooks or takes much longer than the recipe says, the temperature sensor may be failing or touching the oven wall. We test the sensor's resistance as the oven heats, then check calibration with a reference thermometer.

Uneven baking

Hot spots usually mean one element is weak, the convection fan is not running or the sensor is misreading. Dark pans, crowded racks and blocked vents can also cause uneven results, so we rule those out too.

Convection fan not working

A convection oven that bakes like a regular oven may have a failed fan motor, a broken convection element or a control fault. Grinding noises from the back wall often mean the fan bearings are worn.

Self-clean problems

A door that stays locked after self-clean, or a cycle that stops partway through, usually involves the door lock motor, a door switch or the control. The high heat of self-clean is also a frequent trigger for fuse and board failures.

Gas cooktop burner won't light

Constant clicking or no spark often means a wet or dirty burner, a misaligned cap, a cracked electrode or a faulty spark module. Weak or yellow flames usually point to clogged burner ports.

Electric cooktop element not heating

A radiant zone that stays cold, or one stuck on high, commonly comes from a failed surface element or a bad infinite switch behind the knob. Smooth tops can also lose a zone because of a limiter fault.

Cracked glass cooktop

A crack in a glass-ceramic or induction surface should not be used, because spills can reach the electrical parts below. The top can usually be replaced as a part on many models.

Induction cooktop not detecting pans

Induction needs magnetic cookware sized to the zone. If good pans are not detected, a cooling fan, a sensor or a power board may have failed.

Control panel or display problems

Unresponsive touch pads, a blank display or error codes that keep returning usually come from a failed touch panel, ribbon cable or control board. Heat and moisture are the common causes.

Types we service

Single and double wall ovens

Built into cabinetry, wall ovens often need to be partly pulled out for service. We handle elements, sensors, convection fans, door locks and controls.

Gas cooktops

We repair spark ignition systems, burners, valves and knobs on gas cooktops, including professional-style models with high-output burners.

Electric coil and smooth-top cooktops

Coil elements, radiant zones under glass, infinite switches and glass replacement are all part of our electric cooktop work.

Induction cooktops

Induction units use power boards, coils and cooling fans instead of heating elements. We diagnose pan detection, power loss and error faults.

Speed ovens and steam ovens

Combination microwave-convection ovens and steam ovens add specialty parts. We service many built-in models and will tell you up front if a part is only available through the manufacturer.

How your repair works

  1. Set the appointment

Call (678) 866-3669 or book online. Tell us whether it is a wall oven, cooktop or combination, and gas, electric or induction.

  2. Careful testing

Your technician checks heating parts, sensors, ignition, wiring and controls with proper meters, and on gas units confirms the burners light and burn cleanly.

  3. Upfront written price

We lay out the parts and labor in a written estimate. When you approve it, the $80 diagnostic fee comes off.

  4. Repair and calibration

We install factory-recommended parts and verify the oven reaches and holds its set temperature before closing it up.

  5. Cleanup and care tips

We remove old parts and packaging, share tips to keep the appliance running well, and back the work with a 60-day parts and labor warranty.

Maintenance tips from our technicians

Wipe spills promptly

Spills that bake on can block burner ports, stain glass tops and build up around elements. Let the surface cool, then clean it with a product made for that cooktop.

Use self-clean sparingly

The self-clean cycle runs extremely hot and is hard on fuses, locks and control boards. Light cleaning by hand between cycles means you need it less often.

Use the right cookware

Flat-bottomed pans that match the burner size heat evenly and protect glass tops from scratches. Induction requires magnetic cookware.

Keep burner parts clean and dry

After a boil-over, let gas burner caps and heads dry fully before using them. Moisture is a common cause of constant clicking.

Check accuracy once in a while

An inexpensive oven thermometer shows when the temperature drifts, before it ruins a meal.

Keep the hood filter clean

A greasy range hood filter cuts airflow and lets heat and grease build up around the cooktop and controls.

What affects the cost

Oven and cooktop repair pricing is shaped by the type of appliance, the part and the access. A bake element or igniter is generally a modest repair, while a control board, an induction power board or a replacement glass top costs more. Wall ovens may need to come out of the cabinet. Diagnosis costs $80, credited toward the repair when you choose to go ahead with the repair, and you see a written estimate before work begins. Diagnosis is $80 for ranges and cooktops and $120 for built-in wall ovens, double ovens and oven-microwave combos, and the fee is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.

Repair or replace?

Most ovens and cooktops last around 13 to 15 years, and well-built models can go longer. Apply the 50 percent rule: if the repair is more than half the price of a comparable new unit, and the appliance is near the end of that range, replacing it is usually the better choice. Igniters, elements, sensors and switches are worth repairing on almost any oven. On high-end built-in ovens, even a control board is often a sensible repair given their replacement cost.
