Mr. Fixer technician performing washer repair

Every washer does the same four jobs: fill, wash, drain and spin. When one of those steps fails, you end up with soaked clothes, a tub full of water or a machine that walks across the laundry room floor. Knowing which step is failing is the first clue to the cause.

Mr. Fixer Appliance Repair has repaired washing machines in Metro Atlanta homes since 2017. Our licensed and insured technicians carry the parts that commonly wear out, including drain pumps, lid and door locks, inlet valves, belts, couplers and suspension parts, so most washers are running again without a second trip.

Before you try anything yourself, unplug the machine, and on a front-loader make sure the drum is drained before opening the door. Then call (678) 866-3669 or book a visit online and we will take it from there.

Quick checks before you call

  • Unplug the washer and confirm the breaker is on and the outlet works with another device.
  • Make sure both water valves behind the washer are fully open and the fill hoses are not kinked.
  • On a front-loader, place a towel and shallow pan down, then open the drain pump filter at the bottom front and clear any lint, coins or socks.
  • Redistribute the load if it is lumped on one side, and avoid washing a single bulky item alone.
  • Check that the drain hose is not pushed too deep into the standpipe and is not kinked behind the machine.

Common washer problems we fix

Won't drain

A washer that leaves water in the tub usually has a clogged drain pump filter, a sock or coin jammed in the pump, a kinked drain hose or a failed pump motor. Our guide to a washer that won't drain or spin covers the safe checks. On many front-loaders the pump filter sits behind a small panel at the bottom front.

Won't spin

If it drains but will not spin, the lid switch or door lock may not be registering closed, the drive belt or motor coupler may be broken, or the load may be too unbalanced for the machine to start spinning.

Leaking water

Common sources include a torn front-load door boot, a loose or cracked fill hose, a leaking pump, a failed tub seal and excess suds from using too much or the wrong detergent.

Won't start

We check the outlet and breaker, the lid switch or door lock, the control board and, on some models, a thermal fuse on the motor. A machine that beeps but will not start often has a door lock fault.

Shaking, walking or banging

Heavy vibration usually comes from uneven feet, worn suspension springs or dampers on top-loaders, or failing shock absorbers on front-loaders. Washing a single heavy item such as a rug can also throw the drum off balance.

Loud grinding or roaring

A roar that grows louder during the spin is a common sign of worn tub bearings. Squealing often points to a belt, while rattling can be a coin or bra wire caught between the drum and tub.

Won't agitate

On top-loaders, a stripped agitator dog or coupler, a slipping belt or a transmission problem can stop the agitator. The motor may run while the agitator stays still.

Won't fill or fills slowly

Clogged inlet screens, closed supply valves, a kinked hose, a bad inlet valve or a faulty water level pressure switch can all stop the fill. Low house water pressure makes the fill slow as well.

Overfills or fills while draining

Water that keeps coming may mean a stuck inlet valve or a failed pressure switch. A drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe can siphon water out while the machine fills.

Water too hot or too cold

Reversed hoses, a clogged screen on one side of the inlet valve or a failed temperature sensor can stop the washer from mixing water correctly.

Burning smell

A burning odor usually means a belt slipping on a pulley, a motor overheating or an item stuck between the drum and the tub. Stop the machine and unplug it until it is checked.

Musty smell in a front-loader

Detergent residue and moisture trapped in the door boot and dispenser grow mildew. A cleaning cycle and leaving the door open usually fix it, unless the drain is partly blocked.

Types we service

Top-load with agitator

The traditional design with a center post. We repair agitators, couplers, transmissions, lid switches, belts and suspension parts.

High-efficiency top-load

These use a low-profile impeller and less water. Load balancing, lid locks and sensing problems are common, along with shifter and drive motor faults.

Front-load washers

Front-loaders depend on the door boot, door lock, drain pump and shock absorbers. They are efficient, but they need more attention to seals and drain filters.

Stacked and laundry centers

Stacked pairs and one-piece laundry centers have tight access, so repairs take careful disassembly. We service the washer section of both.

Washer-dryer combos

All-in-one units wash and dry in the same drum. We diagnose both the washing side and the drying side, including ventless condenser systems.

How your repair works

  1. Schedule your visit

Call or book online at any hour. Let us know whether it is a top-load or front-load model and which part of the cycle fails.

  2. Find the real cause

The technician runs the washer through fill, agitate, drain and spin, then tests the motor, pump, switches and controls involved in the step that fails.

  3. Written quote, no surprises

We explain the repair and hand you a written estimate. Go ahead with it and the $80 diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair.

  4. Repair on the spot

Most parts are on the truck, so the repair usually happens during the same visit using factory-recommended components.

  5. Test run and coverage

We run a full cycle to check water level, spin speed, drainage and noise. The work carries a 60-day parts and labor warranty.

Maintenance tips from our technicians

Use HE detergent sparingly

High-efficiency washers need HE detergent, and less than you might expect. Too much soap leaves residue, causes odors and can trigger leaks and suds-related errors.

Leave the door or lid open

After the last load, leave the door or lid open so the drum dries. On front-loaders, wipe the folds of the door boot as well.

Clean the pump filter

If your washer has an accessible drain pump filter, clear it every few months. It catches coins, hair ties and lint before they reach the pump.

Replace aging fill hoses

Rubber fill hoses can crack with age. Check them yearly and consider braided stainless hoses to reduce the risk of a burst.

Keep the washer level

Adjust the feet so the machine sits level and firm on the floor. A level washer vibrates less and is easier on the suspension and bearings.

What affects the cost

Washer repair prices vary with the failed part and the design of the machine. A drain pump or lid switch is a quicker job than tub bearings, which require taking much of a washer apart, and stacked units can need extra labor for access. You pay the $80 diagnostic fee for the diagnosis, and it is credited toward the repair if you go ahead. The written estimate comes first, so you can decide with the full number in front of you.

Repair or replace?

A washing machine usually lasts about 10 to 14 years. The 50 percent rule is a good guide: when a repair would cost more than half of a comparable new washer, replacement tends to make more sense, especially on an older machine. Pumps, switches, belts, valves and door locks are typically worth fixing. Worn tub bearings or a cracked outer tub on an older front-loader can change the math, and we will tell you when that is the case.

Washer Repair FAQs

Why won't my washer drain?

A clogged pump filter, a blocked or kinked drain hose or a jammed drain pump is the most common cause. Clearing the pump filter and straightening the hose fix many cases, and a jammed or failed pump needs a technician.

Why is my washing machine making loud noises?

Grinding or roaring during spin often points to worn bearings, banging usually means an unbalanced load or worn suspension, and rattling is often a small object caught in the drum or pump.

Do you offer same-day washer repair?

Yes, in most Metro Atlanta areas. Technicians work weekdays from 8 AM to 6 PM, and you can schedule any time online or by phone.

How much does washing machine repair cost?

It depends on the part and the labor involved. the diagnostic fee is $80 and is credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and you see a written estimate first.

Is it worth repairing an old washer?

If the machine is under about ten years old and the repair is less than half the cost of a new one, it is usually worth fixing. Our technician will tell you plainly if it is not.

Can I fix my washer myself?

Clearing the pump filter, leveling the machine and checking hoses are fine with the power off. Motor, control board and electrical work should be left to a technician to avoid further damage.

My front-loader smells musty. Is that a repair problem?

Usually not. Run a cleaning cycle, wipe the door boot, use less HE detergent and leave the door open between loads. If water stays in the drum, the drain may need service.

Which washer brands do you repair?

All major brands, including Whirlpool, Maytag, LG, Samsung, GE, Kenmore, Electrolux and Frigidaire.

Is there a warranty on washer repairs?

Yes. Our repairs come with 60 days of coverage on both parts and labor.
