A microwave that hums but leaves your coffee cold, throws sparks or refuses to start can throw off every meal of the day. When the unit is mounted over the range, built into a wall or tucked under the counter as a drawer, swapping it out is not a quick trip to the store either.
Mr. Fixer Appliance Repair has been fixing kitchen appliances in Metro Atlanta since 2017, and microwaves are part of that work. Our licensed and insured technicians repair door switches, magnetrons, high-voltage diodes, turntable motors, keypads, control boards, vent fans and drawer mechanisms, using factory-recommended parts.
One thing matters more than anything else here: a microwave is not a safe appliance to open at home. Inside the cabinet, a high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge long after the cord is pulled. Call (678) 866-3669 or book online and let a trained technician handle it.
Quick checks before you call
- Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same outlet to confirm it has power, and look at the breaker panel for a tripped breaker or a GFCI outlet that needs resetting.
- Open and close the door firmly. If something is caught in the latch or the door does not click shut, the safety switches will keep the microwave from running.
- Make sure the glass tray sits flat on its roller ring and that the hub underneath lines up with the coupler in the floor of the cavity.
- Check the display for a lock symbol or the word DEMO. A control lock or demo mode can make a working microwave look broken; your owner's manual explains how to switch it off for your model.
- Heat one cup of water in a microwave-safe mug on high for one minute. It should come out clearly hot. If it is barely warm, the heating circuit has a problem and it is time to call a technician, not to open the cabinet.

Common microwave problems we fix
Runs but does not heat
The light comes on, the turntable spins and the timer counts down, yet the food stays cold. This usually traces to the high-voltage circuit: a failed magnetron, diode, capacitor or high-voltage transformer, or a blown thermal cutout.
Sparking or arcing inside
Flashes and crackling often start at the waveguide cover, the small panel on the cavity wall that gets soaked with grease and food splatter until it burns. Chipped interior paint, a damaged rack support on convection models or a stray piece of metal can also arc. Stop using the microwave until it is checked.
Dead display, no power at all
When nothing lights up, we check the outlet and circuit first, then the line fuse, thermal fuses and control board. A blown main fuse is often a symptom of a failing door switch, so we test the switches before calling the job done.
Stops when the door is touched or will not start
Microwaves use several interlock switches to prove the door is closed before they will run. A worn latch, a broken door hook or a failed switch can stop the unit cold or make it cut out mid-cycle.
Turntable not turning
First make sure the glass tray is seated on its roller ring and the coupler underneath. If it still sits still, the turntable motor or its coupler has usually failed, which is a common and modest repair.
Buttons not responding
Some pads working while others do nothing points to a worn membrane keypad or a loose ribbon connection. If the whole panel ignores you, we check the control board and whether a child lock or demo mode is active.
Vent fan or cooktop light out (over-the-range)
Over-the-range models do double duty as a range hood. Fans that will not start or will not shut off, and lights that stay dark with good bulbs, usually come down to a fan motor, a relay on the control board or a thermostat that switches the fan on when the cooktop gets hot.
Drawer will not open or close
Microwave drawers glide on a motorized mechanism. A drawer that stalls, opens partway or reverses can have a debris-packed track, a worn gear or a fault in the drawer motor or its control.
Turns on by itself or runs with the door open
A microwave that starts without input, or keeps running when the door opens, has a serious interlock or control fault. Unplug it or switch off its breaker and leave it off until it is repaired.
Types we service
Over-the-range microwaves
Mounted above the cooktop with a built-in vent fan and lights, these are the microwaves we repair most often. Many repairs are done in place.
Built-in and wall microwaves
Built-in units sit in a cabinet or above a wall oven, often with a trim kit, and some are speed-cook or convection combinations. We work around the trim and confirm both microwave and convection modes before we leave.
Microwave drawers
Installed below the counter or in an island, drawers add a motorized slide and their own sensors. We repair the drawer mechanism as well as the heating and control parts.
How your repair works
Tell us about the microwave
Call or book online any time. Let us know whether it is over-the-range, built-in or a drawer model, plus the brand and model number if you can find it inside the door frame.
Safe on-site diagnosis
The technician discharges the high-voltage capacitor before working inside, then tests the door switches, fuses, magnetron circuit, controls and fans to pinpoint the fault.
Price in writing
You see the cost of parts and labor in writing first. If you approve the repair, the $120 diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair.
Repair with proper parts
We install factory-recommended parts, and when the job calls for it, we take the unit down from its mount or out of its cabinet and reinstall it securely.
Heat test and warranty
We run a heating test, check the door seal and switches, and confirm the fan and lights on over-the-range models. Your repair carries our 60-day parts and labor warranty.
Maintenance tips from our technicians
Wipe splatters right away
Food and grease that bake onto the cavity walls and waveguide cover are a leading cause of arcing.
Steam-clean gently
Heat a bowl of water with a little lemon juice or vinegar for a few minutes, let it sit, then wipe the softened residue away. Skip abrasive pads that scratch the interior coating.
Clean the grease filters
On over-the-range models, soak the metal grease filters in hot soapy water every month or two. A clogged filter strains the vent fan and traps heat.
Never run it empty
Running a microwave with nothing inside sends energy back toward the magnetron and can shorten its life. Keep metal, foil and dishes with metallic trim out of the cavity.
Treat the door with care
Slamming the door or hanging on it wears the latch and switches. Close it gently and keep the seal surfaces clean so it shuts fully every time.

What affects the cost
The price depends on the failed part, the style of microwave and how much work it takes to reach it. A turntable motor or door switch is typically a smaller job, while a magnetron or control board costs more, and over-the-range, built-in and drawer units may need to be removed for access. the $120 diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and you get a written estimate before any work begins. Our pricing page has more detail.
Repair or replace?
We will be honest about this one. Over-the-range, built-in and drawer models cost more to buy, need installation and must fit a specific opening, so repairing a door switch, magnetron or board is usually the smarter choice. Our guide to repair versus replacement walks through the decision.

Microwave Repair FAQs
Is it safe to open my microwave and look inside?
No. The high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a lethal charge even after the microwave is unplugged. Limit yourself to outside checks such as the outlet, breaker, door and turntable, and leave anything behind the cabinet panels to a technician.
Why does my microwave run but not heat food?
The heating circuit has failed somewhere: commonly the magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor, transformer or a thermal cutout. A faulty door switch can also allow the light and turntable to run without heat on some models.
What causes sparks inside a microwave?
Metal objects, foil or dishes with metallic trim are the first thing to rule out. After that, a burned waveguide cover, chipped cavity paint or a damaged rack support are the usual sources. Stop using it until the cause is fixed, since arcing can damage the magnetron.
Do you repair over-the-range and built-in microwaves?
Yes. Over-the-range, built-in, wall and drawer microwaves are a large part of our microwave work, including the vent fans and lights on over-the-range units.
Do you repair countertop microwaves?
No. We service over-the-range, built-in and drawer microwaves. We do not repair countertop models.
How much does microwave repair cost?
the diagnostic fee is $120 and is credited toward the repair if you go ahead. The repair price depends on the part and access, and you receive it in writing before we start.
Which microwave brands do you service?
All major brands, including Sharp, GE, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Frigidaire and Bosch, as well as premium built-in brands such as Thermador, Wolf, Viking and Dacor.
Is my microwave repair covered by a warranty?
Yes. Microwave repairs include our 60-day parts and 60-day labor warranty.
