Gas or electric: how the heat source changes the job
Both dryer types share a drum, belt, rollers, motor and blower. Where they differ is how they make heat, and that shapes many no-heat repairs.
- Electric dryers use a heating element, high-limit thermostat, cycling thermostat and thermal fuse. A no-heat call often comes down to one of these.
- Gas dryers use an igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils. The parts are different, and anything involving the gas valve is professional work only.
If you smell gas near a gas dryer, leave the home and call your gas utility from outside. Do not try to find the leak yourself. Our guide on a dryer not heating walks through the safe checks for both types.
What else moves the price
- Mechanical wear. Thumping, squealing or scraping usually means drum rollers, an idler pulley, glides or a belt. These are often done together because they wear at the same rate.
- Electronics. Moisture sensors, timers and control boards cost more than thermostats and fuses, and newer models lean on them.
- Stacked units and tight closets. Pulling a dryer out of a small laundry closet, or lifting it off a washer, adds labor.
- The vent. A blocked vent makes the dryer overheat and can blow the thermal fuse again after a repair. We will point out a vent problem so the fix lasts.
Why long drying times cost you twice
A dryer that needs two or three cycles to dry a load is not just an annoyance. Every extra cycle adds to the power or gas bill, and it puts more hours on the belt, rollers, motor and heating parts, wearing them out sooner.
Long drying times usually come from a restricted vent, a weak heating element or igniter, or a sensor that ends the cycle too early. A restricted vent also lets lint build up inside the cabinet near the heat source, which is a fire risk. Fixing the cause early tends to keep the repair small. Waiting often means a burned-out fuse or element on top of the original problem, which adds to the estimate.
Should you repair or replace the dryer?
Dryers commonly last about 10 to 13 years. The 50 percent rule is a good test: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new dryer, or the dryer is near the end of that range and has needed other repairs, replacing is usually the better choice.
Belts, rollers, fuses, thermostats, elements and igniters are inexpensive next to a new dryer and worth fixing on almost any model. A failed control board on an older dryer is the main case for replacing. See our repair vs. replacement guide for more on the decision.
Ways to avoid a second dryer repair
- Clean the lint screen every load and wash it with soapy water now and then if dryer sheets leave a film.
- Have the vent run cleaned out regularly and check the outside flap opens when the dryer runs.
- Replace flimsy foil or plastic transition ducts with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct.
- Avoid drying very heavy loads at once, which strains the belt, rollers and motor.

Why does my dryer keep blowing the thermal fuse?
A thermal fuse usually blows because the dryer overheated, most often from a restricted vent. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent tends to lead to the same failure again.
Is gas dryer repair more expensive than electric?
Not necessarily. Both start from $180 plus parts on standard brands. The price depends on which part failed, and the written estimate shows the actual cost.
What does the $80 dryer diagnostic include?
A technician visit to test the dryer and find the cause, followed by a written estimate. The $80 is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.
