Why the microwave diagnostic is higher than a fridge or washer
A microwave looks simple, but it holds one of the most dangerous circuits in the kitchen. The high-voltage capacitor can store a charge after the unit is unplugged, so a technician has to discharge it safely before testing the magnetron, diode, transformer and door switches.
Over-the-range models also have to come down from the wall bracket for most internal repairs, which is a two-handed job on a unit that also serves as your range hood. Built-in and drawer models need to be pulled from their trim and cabinet. That extra handling and testing time is why the diagnostic is $120. Please do not open a microwave cabinet yourself.
How the type of microwave affects the price
The same failed part can mean very different amounts of work depending on how the microwave is installed.
- Over-the-range: the unit usually comes off its wall plate and upper cabinet bolts for internal repairs. These models also include a vent fan, cooktop light and grease filters, which add more parts that can fail.
- Built-in with trim kit: the trim has to come off and the microwave slides out of the cabinet opening.
- Drawer microwaves: mounted below the counter, with a motorized drawer and its own mechanism to diagnose.
- Oven-microwave combos: the microwave sits above a wall oven in one large unit, which is why repairs start from $250 plus parts.
The written estimate reflects the actual installation, so there are no surprises once the job begins.
Common microwave repairs and what affects them
- Runs but does not heat: often the magnetron, diode, capacitor or a thermal cutout. The magnetron is usually the costliest of these parts.
- Dead display: frequently a blown fuse caused by a failing door switch, which we test together.
- Turntable not spinning: usually the turntable motor or coupler, a smaller repair.
- Sparking: a burned waveguide cover or damaged cavity paint. Stop using it until it is checked.
- Vent fan or light out on over-the-range models: fan motors, switches and bulbs are common, modest fixes.
See our microwave repair page for the full list of what we fix.
Is the microwave worth repairing?
Microwaves typically last around 7 to 10 years. Use the 50 percent rule: when a repair costs more than half of what a comparable new unit costs, or the microwave is near the end of that range, replacement usually wins.
For an over-the-range, built-in or drawer model, replacing it can mean matching the mounting bracket, cabinet opening or trim kit, plus installation. For those, repair is often the better value. Our repair vs. replace guide has more.
Getting a quicker, cheaper repair
- Write down the model number, usually on a label inside the door frame.
- Note what happens: does it hum, spark, go dark or stop when you touch the door? Those details help us bring the right parts.
- Stop using a microwave that sparks, smells burnt or keeps tripping the breaker.
- Clean grease from the waveguide cover and filters regularly to prevent arcing and fan strain.
